Data
This data breaks down bull moose, cow moose, calf moose and total harvest numbers by:
- wildlife management unit (WMU)
- calendar year
Harvest and active hunter numbers are estimates based on replies received from a sample of hunters and are therefore subject to statistical error.
In addition to the values presented, from 2006-2017, an estimated annual average of approximately 160 calf moose were harvested across the province by approximately 6,400 active resident hunters who did not apply for an adult validation tag.

Column | Type | Description |
---|---|---|
WMU | Text |
The administrative coverage areas that serve as a land base for wildlife monitoring and management. Indicate the areas of Ontario where hunting open seasons and harvest quotas may apply. Boundaries are regulated under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act - Ontario Regulation 663/98, Part 6 as amended. Data for WMU 59 is not available before 2019. |
Year | Numeric |
Calendar Year. Within each calendar year hunting open seasons are defined for each Wildlife Management Unit. |
Active Hunters | Numeric |
Estimated number of moose licence holders that hunted for moose. From 2006-2018 active hunter numbers are estimates based on replies received from a sample of resident hunters that applied for an adult validation tag and are therefore subject to statistical error. In 2019 and 2020 all moose tag holders had a mandatory hunter reporting obligation. Beginning in 2021 all moose licence holders have a mandatory hunter reporting obligation. Numbers have been rounded to the nearest whole number. The estimate of the number of active hunters may vary from other values (e.g. total licence sales) as individual hunters may have been counted as active hunters in up to three Wildlife Management Units, while others may have purchased a licence but decided not to hunt. In addition to the values presented, during 2006-2017 there was an estimated annual average of approximately 6,400 active resident hunters across the province who did not apply for an adult validation tag. |
Bull Harvest | Numeric |
Estimated number of bull moose harvested. Harvest numbers are estimates based on replies received from a sample of hunters and are therefore subject to statistical error. Numbers have been rounded to the nearest whole number. |
Cow Harvest | Numeric |
Estimated number of cow moose harvested. Harvest numbers are estimates based on replies received from a sample of hunters and are therefore subject to statistical error. Numbers have been rounded to the nearest whole number. |
Calf Harvest | Numeric |
Estimated number of calf moose harvested. Harvest numbers are estimates based on replies received from a sample of hunters and are therefore subject to statistical error. Numbers have been rounded to the nearest whole number. In addition to the values presented, during 2006-2018 an estimated annual average of approximately 160 calf moose were harvested each year across the province by resident hunters who did not apply for an adult validation tag. |
Total Harvest | Numeric |
Estimated total number of moose harvested. Total Harvest was calculated by adding together the Bull Harvest, Cow Harvest, and Calf Harvest. |
