Fish Contaminants

Data on fish contaminants is collected across Ontario. Contaminants are chemicals that could be harmful to environment and human health. Toxic contaminants can enter in waterbodies in different ways and can accumulate in fish. Contaminants include:

  • mercury
  • polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)
  • dioxins/furans
  • organochlorine pesticides and others.

We collect this data to:

  • track long-term trends in fish contaminant levels across the province
  • provide site-specific assessments
  • evaluate the success of remedial measures put in place to reduce contaminants
  • provide fish consumption (eating) advice
